THE ESCAPED MOON

Pluto is so small that, if it orbited a planet instead of the Sun, it would be recognised as an average-sized moon. In fact, some scientists believe that it was a moon of Neptune which somehow managed to escape from the planet's orbit and go on an orbit of its own around the Sun. This might explain why Pluto's orbit is so peculiar and why it goes closer to the Sun than Neptune on occasions, but spends so much of its orbit around the Sun at such a huge distance away from any planet. It may also explain why the planet does not orbit on a level plain with the other eight planets, but goes above and below them.
