THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Orbiting Earth is a giant telescope called the Hubble Space Telescope. This telescope is similar to Earth-based telescopes, although it does not have to look through Earth's atmosphere which distorts most images taken from Earth-based telescopes. It also does not have interference from street lights and pollution.

The Hubble Space Telescope observes the Solar System and takes digital images of deep space. These images are very clear and allow us to see millions of kilometres into space. Below are some pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

This picture on the right shows light and shadow in the Carina Nebula. It is known as the "Keyhole Nebula."

On the left is a picture of a collection of stars deep in space.

On the right is a picture of a collection of galaxies. This was the first picture taken by the Hubble Space Telescope after it was repaired in January 2000

This picture of two galaxies colliding shows how clear the pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope are. These galaxies would be billions and billions and billions of kilometres away from Earth for the Hubble Space Telescope to be able to take pictures of them both in their entirety.
